Fort Pierce, the Sunrise City, is a striving community mid-way down the east coast of Florida. It is  often used as a retirement community with a growing population just over 42,000. The downtown, located on the riverfront of the Indian River Lagoon and a waterfront park, affords residents contemporary shopping, and dining. Main Street Fort Pierce, Inc., a comprehensive revitalization program designed to encourage economic development in conjunction with historic preservation, some say it has been successful in reviving the downtown. An example of its success is the number of community festivals that it brings here. Located about halfway down the east coast of Florida, Fort Pierce represents an alternative to living in the big city or in a very affluent community. There are many miles of unspoiled beaches along the ocean, plus plenty of waterways connected to the intercoastal.  Not everyone is a big fan of living here thanks to poverty and a high crime rate.

Retirees who live in Fort Pierce find it is possible to live near the water – either the beach or the intercoastal. There are many apartment buildings that offer carefree living and varying degrees of amenities. Or retirees can choose to live in one of the many gated communities in the town or surrounding area. Fort Pierce is midway down the east coast of Florida. It is flat with the Atlantic Ocean on the East with business and real estate development to the west. Winters are warm and summers are hot and wet.

Fort Pierce is proud to have a number of educational and research facilities, including: Indian River Community College, the $6 million Smithsonian Institution Research Center, the Manatee Observation and Education Center and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. The historic, 1,200 seat Sunrise Theatre is being restored and will soon serve as a regional performing arts center. The Port St. Lucie County Library has a magnificent branch in downtown Fort Pierce.

Crime in Fort Pierce is very high - it is currently about double the national average, though that is a very steep drop from staggering rates in the past ten years.
